The Art Center has been working with BUZZ magazine over the last two years to bring some art to the street corners of Jacksonville. Mike White, CEO of Client Focused Media, who owns BUZZ, had the idea that the collection of newspaper distribution boxes we have on some many street corners around town deserved an artistic upgrade.
He obtained nearly one hundred old Times Union newspaper distribution boxes to become canvases for Jacksonville artists. It was clear from the beginning that he would need some help, so he came to The Art Center for some help. It was a huge project. The boxes needed to be cleaned, primed and prepped for painting and area artists needed to be alerted to the opportunity.
Pretty soon truckloads of the old boxes started showing up at TAC's Hogan St. gallery and several priming and prep parties were held to get the boxes ready. In the end seventy boxes were covered with art from some of the best known artists in town.
At the beginning of 2014 the boxes were distributed all over Jacksonville and the Beaches. The artists were also asked to create a piece of work for a special show. It's been a long time coming, but you can see the work of these talented artists at a new show, called "Artists with a BUZZ" at The Art Center's new gallery at the Landing.
The show will run from September 25th through October 15th, with the opening reception on Friday, September 25, from 6-8.
